Why did Nietzsche have such a grotesque moustache? What was he trying to prove?

A man doesn't grow his beard and meticulously shave the rest of the face without consciously and subconsciously thinking about it. There's some meaning to it, even when they say "no meaning". One book said women were repelled by it. I myself am thinking what to do with my facial hair and what I'm trying to prove (I think growing might reflect my free nature, but it might look hippie-like and I don't like hippies), even though I pretend it's nothing to think about.
