With respect, here is an answer from a non-Muslim. The difference is in the minds of the people concerned. People have different interpretations and different views of exactly the same thing. Once you have definitions, like Shia and Sunni, or Catholic and Protestant, those different view become hardened and focused. So don't waste your time trying to pinpoint a difference in the doctrines or theology, but instead accept that all the differences are because the beliefs ae held by Human Beings, each one of whom is an individual. And there are no gods! Just us.
